Summer Booster Workshops 2021
We have had the most fantastical week immersing ourselves into fantasy worlds, exploring different dimensions and creating characters that exist outside the realm of the ordinary.
The Writing Box ran 2 workshops across the week - a 2-day Booster and a 3-day Booster. Whilst the latter allowed us to delve into the writing process a little deeper with an extra day, both workshops inspired powerful learning and generated brilliant writing in a fun, stimulating environment.
Across the workshops we deconstructed the writing process, encouraging children to think separately about character, setting and action, and only then providing the space for these elements to merge together into a structured 5-part narrative. Due to an increase in numbers, we were able to host 2 classes, a Lower Key Stage 2 class and an Upper Key Stage 2 class. Both classes were challenged and supported appropriately, with year group objectives highlighted in order to ensure the best outcomes could take place.
We could not have anticipated the level of imagination that was brought into class every day; the land of Evolia - an evil place that is run by a mad King, Amelia McQuery - a young girl who enters the world of Syrconay and must escape, and many more fantasy stories inspired by Greek mythology and ancient lands.
Some of our older children got technical, and recorded themselves reading extracts of their work in front of a green screen - literally transporting the viewers into their fantasy lands whilst practicing key skills of reading back over your work and using expression for entertainment - see an example of this below. Allowing the space for this type of absorption into writing is exactly why The Writing Box started, and we could not be prouder of the children’s engagement and enjoyment this week.
Stay tuned for October Half Term dates and a whole new genre to explore...
