May Half Term Workshop 2021

Wow - what a fantastic few days of writing! Due to unforeseen events, we were smaller than we had anticipated, and we had to take it online for some children. This adaptation worked better than we could have ever expected, and we had 3 days of laughing, brainstorming, exploring and writing. It was the best.

We kicked off the first day with a treasure hunt around school, using the clues as inspiration for the breadcrumbs we might want to use in our stories that we would be writing. It was so good to see collaboration across all the activities, where children were encouraged to share their work, build on their friends ideas and tweak their own thoughts continuously. On the second day we put masks on and played a game that stimulated our senses. This set us up nicely to begin to write setting and character descriptions as viscerally as possible. All of this planning made the third day easy. We had a short time to sketch out the journey of our story, and we put some music on and we wrote, and wrote and wrote. And stopped for an ice cream and a run around, and then wrote more.

Every child walked away with a booklet full of their original words, confidence in their ability to think and feeling inspired about what being a writer means and how to channel their unique thoughts into something that they are inspired by and proud of.
